A diversificação da vegetação reduz o ataque do bicho-mineiro-do-cafeeiro Leucoptera coffeella (Guérin-mèneville) (Lepidoptera: Lyonetiidae)? Neotropical Entomology
Amaral,Dany S; Venzon,Madelaine; Pallini,Angelo; Lima,Paulo C; DeSouza,Og.
The effects of increasing plant diversity on the population of the coffee leaf-miner Leucoptera coffeella (Guérin-Mèneville) were investigated in two organic coffee production systems. One system consisted of coffee intercropped with banana trees (shaded system) and the other one of coffee intercropped with pigeon pea (unshaded system). The increase in plant diversity on both systems was achieved via introduction of green manures such a perennial pea nut, sunn hemp and Brazilian lucerne. The population of L. coffeella, predation and parasitism of L. coffeella mines were biweekly evaluated during eight months. The increase in plant diversity on both systems did not affect the attack of L. coffeella on coffee leaves and the mine parasitism rate. However,...

De metselwesp Ancistrocerus ichneumonideus toch weer opgedoken (Hymenoptera: Vespidae)! Naturalis
Smit, J..

Naturalis
Smit, J.; Megens, P..
New records of the rare wasps Microdynerus exilis and Chrysis gracillima in the Netherlands (Hymenoptera: Vespidae, Chrysididae) Microdynerus exilis and Chrysis gracillima have been rarely recorded in recent times in the Netherlands. New records were the impulse to compile the records of these two species. Only Microdynerus nugdunensis is known in literature as potential host for M. exilis. It seems sure that M. exilis is the main host of C. gracillima in the Netherlands, considering the distribution patterns (fig. 3-5), several records of both species at the exact same locality and the congruent pattern of records over the year (fig. 6).

Diversity of social wasps (Hymenoptera, Vespidae, Polistinae) in three fragments of semideciduous seasonal forest in the northwest of São Paulo State, Brazil Rev. Bras. entomol.
Gomes,Bruno; Noll,Fernando B..
Human exploitation of the forest in the northwest of São Paulo State has generated enormous fragmentation of that forest. Such disturbance has reduced the populations of insects in general. This work was a survey of social wasps (Hymenoptera, Vespidae; Polistinae) in three areas in different stages of regeneration: Paulo de Faria - SP (435 ha), Pindorama - SP (128 ha) and Neves Paulista - SP (1 ha). These three areas were chosen for comparative purposes. To capture the wasps, it was used: active collecting with attractant liquid (solution of water, salt and sugar) with the aid of a dorsal spray bag. During the period from July to December 2006, 414 social wasps were collected in Paulo de Faria, constituting seven species belonging to four genera; 111...

Efeitos de variáveis ambientais, irrigação e vespas predadoras sobre Leucoptera coffeella (Guérin-Méneville) (Lepidoptera: Lyonetiidae) no cafeeiro Neotropical Entomology
Fernandes,Flávio L; Mantovani,Everardo C; Bonfim Neto,Hermes; Nunes,Victor De V.

HIGH-PERFORMANCE GEL FILTRATION PATTERNS OF VENOMS FROM THREE SPECIES OF WASPS OF THE GENUS Polybia (HYMENOPTERA, VESPIDAE) J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
PALMA,M. S.; MANZOLI-PALMA,M. F.; GOBBI,N..
The profiles of high-performance gel filtration of venoms from Polybia paulista, Polybia ignobilis and Polybia occidentalis occidentalis showed 13 peaks distributed among the three species. These profiles presented similarities that permitted the chromatographic characterization of the genus Polybia and differences that permitted the identification of each species studied. Thus, the comparative analysis of chromatographic profiles of high-performance gel filtration of venoms may be used as an auxiliary tool in taxonomic studies of Polybia wasps.

Nesting substrata, colony success and productivity of the wasp Mischocyttarus cassununga Rev. Bras. entomol.
Castro,Mariana M. de; Avelar,Daniela L. Guimarães de; Souza,André R. de; Prezoto,Fábio.
Nesting substrata, colony success and productivity of the wasp Mischocyttarus cassununga. Colonies of the wasp Mischocyttarus cassununga (von Ihering, 1903) are easily found in urban areas. However, in spite of the massive presence of this species in cities, little is known about its nesting habits, colony success and productivity. The present study aimed at answering the following questions: What are the substrates used for nesting by M. cassununga? What is the main foundation strategy adopted by M. cassununga in urban areas: a solitary female or associative foundation? Is there a relationship between foundation strategies and colony success? Is the total number of cells per nest related to the number of adults produced? The study was conducted in Juiz de...

Population densities and biomass of Neotropical social wasps (Hymenoptera, Vespidae) related to colony size, hunting range and wasp size Zoologia
Raw,Anthony.
At a locality near Brasilia the sizes of hunting areas and of colonies of 13 species of social wasps varied greatly. Size of the hunting area varied 152 fold and was strongly related to the number of adult wasps per colony which varied 400 fold. The total number of adults of the 13 species was estimated at 182.9/ ha (range 7.1 fold among the species) and their total biomass was 1.6 kg/ ha (range 3.6 fold). Hunting range was not significantly related to body size. Variation in wing area (11.3 fold) was similar to that of the fresh weight of the adult female (10.7 fold). Eleven species showed habitat preferences where they hunted. Models relating prey size to the distance prey are carried are discussed.

Reconsideration of the taxonomy of the Ropalidia malayana-complex (Hymenoptera: Vespidae: Polistinae) Naturalis
Kojima, J..
The taxonomy of the Ropalidia malayana-complex is reconsidered after studying mainly the specimens examined by van der Vecht (1941, 1962) and housed in the Nationaal Natuurhistorisch Museum, Leiden. The complex is shown to consist of three species: R. malayana (Cameron, 1903) [= R. parvimaculata (Cameron, 1907), = R. delicata Dover, 1931], R. erythrospila (Cameron, 1908) and R. pseudomalayana spec. nov. The last species is described from Borneo.

Relevance of wing morphology in distinguishing and classifying genera and species of Stenogastrinae wasps Naturalis
Baracchi, D.; Dapporto, L.; Turillazzi, S..
The phylogeny of the Stenogastrinae wasps is still under discussion and their systematic incomplete. In the present work we used geometric morphometrics, a technique based on a rigorous statistical assessment of shape, to compare the forewings of fifteen species of Stenogastrinae wasps belonging to four different genera to ascertain whether this approach may be used as a reliable method in the study of the taxonomy of the group. The results show that the wing vein junctions can be diagnostic for both genus and species identification. For the first time in this subfamily, we propose a phylogenetic classification of the species based on wing morphology that largely agrees with the cladistic data available at genus level and reflects the differences among...

Subgeneric affiliation of Ropalidia thailandia Gusenleitner: a case showing ambiguity of the subgenera of Ropalidia Guérin-Méneville (Hymenoptera: Vespidae: Polistinae) Naturalis
Kojima, J..
The subgeneric affiliation of Ropalidia thailandia Gusenleitner, 1994, is reexamined. Gusenleitner (1994) placed this species in the subgenus Icarielia, in particular comparing it with R. decorata. Examination of characters not mentioned by Gusenleitner suggests instead that R. thailandia belongs to the R. stigmagroup, which is not included in the subgenus Icarielia. The case of R. thailandia shows that the subgenera of the genus Ropalidia are still ill-defined.

Surveying neotropical social wasps: an evaluation of methods in the "Ferreira Penna" research station (ECFPn), in Caxiuanã, PA, Brazil (Hym., Vespidae, Polistinae) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Silveira,Orlando Tobias.
A survey of social wasps was made in the area of the "Ferreira Penna" Research Station (ECFPn) in Caxiuanã, PA, Brazil. Traditional collecting methods as the use of Malaise traps and the search for individuals and colonies of wasps along trails in the forest and by river margins, were applied in a more systematized fashion. Seventy-nine species belonging to 18 genera were discovered within a discontinuous period of 52 days of collecting. Angiopolybia pallens, Polybia liliacea, and several Agelaia species were the most frequently collected species. Active search for wasps in the forest and by river margins was far more efficient than Malaise traps regarding the discovery of polistine species.

Taxonomy of the Ropalidia flavopicta-complex (Hymenoptera: Vespidae: Polistinae) Naturalis
Kojima, J..
The taxonomy of the "species" treated as subspecies of Ropalidia flavopicta (= R. flavopicta-complex) by van der Vecht (1962) were reexamined. Four forms in the complex other than the species in the Philippine Islands are concluded to be valid species: R. flavopicta (Smith), R. javanica van der Vecht, R. ochracea van der Vecht, and R. ornaticeps (Cameron). The two subspecies of the Philippine species, R. flavobrunnea van der Vecht, namely lapiniga Kojima and iracunda Kojima, are sunk into the nominate species. A new species is described based on a female listed under "R. flavopicta flavobrunnea " by van der Vecht (1962).
